Located within the Swedish polar circle, the city of Kiruna was created in the early XX century to feed the world’s need for iron. From its underground comes a big part of the 90% of iron ore circulating in the European Union. However after more than a century of intense mining activities, the city is slowly being swallowed by the hole created by the mine owned by LKAB, a powerful public company of the Swedish state. Large parts of Kiruna, including the entire downtown area, must inevitably move some kilometres away. The process will happen over the next coming years.
